Home Sports Jaguars in driver’s seat after batsmen redemption – Chanderpaul, Pestano, Barnwell...
2018/19 CWI Regional 4-Day Championships…
By Brandon Corlette
It will be an intriguing day of play today in the Cricket West Indies Regional 4-Day tournament being played at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia. The Guyana Jaguars require eight wickets to complete victory in the first round of this tournament, while the Volcanoes batters will face the uphill task of achieving 294 runs with eight wickets in hand.
After an ordinary first innings outing for the Jaguars batsmen, they were up to the task the second time around, scoring 310-4 declared. They ended day two on 115-3 with night watchman Clinton Pestano and opening batsman Tagenarine Chanderpaul carrying the mantle. The Berbician Pestano in particular was admirable in his stroke play, being selective although aggressive in his batting, hitting five sixes and two boundaries in his career best 69 from 127 balls; in contrast with Chanderpaul’s defensive batting, which was rock solid.
Chanderpaul and Pestano added 111 runs together, with the latter being dismissed in the 80th over by the lively left arm fast bowler Deleon Johnson when the score was 225-4. Christopher Barnwell partnered Tagenarine Chanderpaul and continued the scoring for the Jaguars.
Volcanoes bowlers were not as effective, as Barnwell, in his approach, counterattacked the ordinary Volcanoes bowling attack. Enjoying a healthy lead in the match, the captain Leon Johnson declared, giving his bowlers some time to bowl. Tagenarine Chanderpaul was left unbeaten, scoring a gritty 84 runs from 334 balls, while Barnwell was unbeaten on 61 off 80 balls. They had created an unbroken 85- run partnership.
The Guyana Jaguars batted 108.1 overs, ending on 310-4. Deleon Johnson, Shane Shillingford and Ray Jordan picked up one wicket each in a poor outing.
Windward Islands Volcanoes, with a daunting target of 348 runs, were winded in the first over. Jaguars’ talismanic bowler Keon Joseph was hit for a boundary in the first over, but was rewarded with a wicket that same over. The eventful over started off with Volcanoes opener Tyrone Theophille hitting a four off the third ball, but being removed the very next ball.
At 7-1 Kirk Edwards partnered Taryk Gabriel, and the pair batted with a survival mentality for quite some time. The pair batted for over 14 overs and scored 24 runs as the Jaguars bowlers maintained a consistent line and length. Kirk Edwards was adjudged leg before wicket off the bowling of Clinton Pestano. Pestano continued his impressive match with bat and ball with his fifth wicket of the match, in which he scored an attractive 69.
Taryk Gabriel batting 55 balls and scoring 33 runs, ensured no further hiccups for the Volcanoes as they finished with 54-2 at stumps in 20 overs. Kaveem Hodge is the other not out batsman with 9. Pestano and Joseph are the wicket takers for the Jaguars, thus far. The final day will commence today at 14:00h Eastern Caribbean Time.
