Jaguars open season in commanding fashion

CWI Colonial Medical Insurance Regional 4-day…

Defending champions Guyana Jaguars are sitting pretty after day one of their 2020 campaign in the Cricket West Indies Colonial Medical Insurance Regional 4-day Tournament, being played in North Sound, Antigua & Barbuda.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul

In the day/night encounter at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Jaguars took the first strike against Leeward Islands Volcanoes, and posted 210-4 from 90 overs at stumps. Seasoned campaigner Christopher Barnwell is overnight in the middle on 3, because the Volcanoes had the last laugh of the day.
Earlier in the day, Chandrapaul Hemraj played an attacking innings and pressed past the half-century mark, but was dismissed prior to the lunch interval. Hemaj made 52 from 60 deliveries, and his innings was laced with 4 boundaries and two maximums before he held out to Jaison Peters off Kezron Archibald.
The score ticked over to 70-1.

Leon Johnson

The Guyana captain Leon Johnson, entering at number three to partner Tagenarine Chanderpaul, showed that he was focused. Tagnarine Chanderpaul wore down the Leewards’ attack by scoring at an immensely slow rate, at one point recording only 27 from 170 deliveries, which included one boundary.
The veteran Johnson was able to capitalise on the fatigued opposition and hit six boundaries and a maximum on his way to the half-century mark. However, just when the left-hander was looking to accelerate the scoring rate, he was trapped lbw by Damion Jacobs for 59.
The score was then 144-2.
In came the other left- hander, Vishaul Singh, just under 2 overs before the tea interval, and pushed Guyana to 147-2 before play was stopped.
When the match resumed, Chanderpaul upped the ante and eventually passed the 50-run mark; while Singh, sturdy at the other end, converted at a better rate.
However, Chanderpaul did not dig deep enough to convert the solid foundation he had laid, and fell for 60 to Sheeno Berridge after facing exactly 40 overs (240 balls).
The score was then at 200-3.
With 7 overs left in the evening’s play, Christopher Barnwell, the next batsman in, was content to see out the day’s play alongside Singh. However, Archibald, who had an excellent day, removed Singh for 25 on the final ball of the day.
Day two commences at 14:00 hrs today.
