January 24 boxing card is official as fighters put pen to paper

The boxing community in Guyana is gearing up for a landmark event as the January 24, 2026, Pro/Am boxing card, billed as the “Pro/Am Showdown”, prepares to make history at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The event was officially launched yesterday with a contract signing and press conference, marking the first official card under the newly unified Caribbean Boxing Organization (CBO) structure.
President of the CBO and CEO of Briso Promotions, Seon Bristol expressed excitement about the event and the talent representing Guyana. “As we know, boxing is an art. And out of Guyana, we have produced many world champions. As a matter of fact, at one point in time, Guyana held five world championships simultaneously. I don’t believe any part of the Caribbean has done that,” Bristol said.

“Let’s acknowledge and give our hats off to these prized fighters who will be representing themselves, but most importantly, us Guyanese. We trust that they will do whatever is necessary to be victorious. Those who fight in the mountains themselves will be looking for the best. And the best you will see come January.”
Vice President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Joshua Abdool, echoed the enthusiasm, emphasising the fighters’ quiet confidence.
“Don’t be fooled by the reserved nature of the boxers here,” Abdool said. “They tend to do the talking in the ring, and you’ll see on January 24th. It will be fantastic and the start of building many more champions. Guyana has always been strong in boxing, and we hope to see many more events like this.”
In a move designed to modernise the sport in Guyana, fighters at the contract signing received immediate signing bonuses – a significant step toward breaking the traditional “amateur-pay” culture and elevating professional standards within the region.
The January 24 card promises thrilling matchups that will bring together top talent from across the Caribbean.
Guyanese featherweight Keevin Allicock will face Yendy Rodriguez from the Dominican Republic, while Guyanese super middleweight Desmond Amsterdam will clash with Dominican fighter Wilson Fernandez. Additionally, Guyanese Terrence Adams will go up against Anthony Joseph from Trinidad and Tobago in a catchweight bout.
The Pro/Am Showdown represents more than just a night of boxing; it marks a renewed effort to elevate Caribbean boxing on the regional stage, celebrating Guyana’s rich history in the sport while providing a platform for the next generation of champions.
