As Guyana moves to bridge the urban and rural divide, students in Regions One, Two, Seven, Eight, and Nine will benefit from solar powered lights.
United Nations Resident Coordinator Mikiko Tanaka presented 120 solar lanterns to Education Minister Nicolette Henry and Public Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Collette Adams at the Finance Ministry’s Boardroom on Thursday.
The donation was presented on behalf of Japan-based tech giant Panasonic,

which financed the initiative in commemoration of its 100th anniversary. Minister Henry told the gathering that the donation would equip the students, especially those in the hinterland, to spend longer hours studying which can boost educational advancement.
The UN Resident Coordinator meanwhile explained that Guyana was the first Central and South American nation to benefit from the initiative, which has already been taken to some African nations. She noted that the UN would monitor the distribution process.
Meanwhile, an earlier event was held, which saw the signing of a project document which aims to strengthen women’s disaster management capacities in Guyana and Dominica, and the Exchange of Notes between Yoshinori Yakabe, Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Japan and Tanaka, who is also the United Nations Development Fund (UNDP) representative.
