Jamual John continued his winning run on Sunday at the 18th edition of the Diamond Mineral Water 60-Miler cycling road race. Despite falling behind the peloton in the initial stages of the race, John along with Paul DeNobrega made up good ground to catch the early leaders just before the turn back point at “Halfway tree” Perseverance, Mahaicony.
However, speaking exclusively to Guyana Times Sport John revealed that due to constant marking of each other (himself and DeNobrega), other cyclists attacked and opened a sizable gap on the return trip from Mahaicony.
The duo again had to make up ground and initiated the final attack at Buxton, from thereon the cyclist who would take the race was already decided. John’s remarkable gift of endurance and a strong finish carried him to the vacant title in a time of two hours 14 minutes 17 seconds.
John revealed that it was a challenging ride but said that he relished the competition as he is aiming to keep himself in top form as he continues training for the upcoming trips to the Commonwealth Games in Australia, Pan American Cycling Championships in Peru and the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Colombia all set for 2018.
Alanzo Ambrose took second after holding off a spirited attack from third placed Paul DeNobrega while fourth to sixth was taken by Christopher “Chicken Legs” Griffith, Cortis Dey and Paul Cho-wee-nam.
In the Junior category Cortis Dey took the top podium spot while second and third went to his rivals Briton John and Marcus Keiler.
Paul Cho-wee-nam was the first veteran cyclist over the finish line, he was followed by Alex Mendes and Junior Niles.
In the Mountain Bikers event, Ozia McAulay outlasted Sean Budhan and Julio Melville to cop first place. The oldest cyclist to complete the race was Montgomery Parris. (Michelangelo Jacobus)
