… Shiv becomes leading run scorer in Regional Super50
Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit an unbeaten 58 to see the Guyana Jaguars comfortably home by six wickets over the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) Marooners on Friday evening at the Kensington Oval in Group B of the Regional Super50. In the process the champion left handed batsman became the Region’s all-time leading run-scorer in the 50 over format.
“Tiger” as he is fondly called achieved the landmark when he pulled a short ball from Nino Henry to go to 10. He now has 2,927 runs, surpassing the mark of 2,878 held by Floyd Reifer.
The win, the Jaguars third from five matches puts them in second position behind the Barbados Pride but ahead of the Jamaica Scorpions who will next play the Marooners on Sunday. The top two team will emerge from the group and advance to the semifinals which will be played in Antigua on February 15 and 16 at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.
The Marooners opted to bat first and were bowled out for 188 in the final over of their innings with opener Amir Jangoo hitting 30. Ronsford Beaton, who continues to have a good tournament bagged 3-52. Left arm spinner, Veerasammy Permaul had 2-29 while the was one a-piece for Steven Jacobs (1-22), Ramon Reifer (1-38) and Paul Wintz (1-41) who got his first game where he replaced Devendra Bishoo.
After a slight wobble during the run chase, the Jaguars Captain stabilized the innings with two half century partnership. First to go was Rajendra Chandrika for 9 in the sixth over at 11-1 then the Jaguars were in further trouble when Shimron Hetmyer was sent back for 5 at 19-2 in the ninth over. Hetmyer was playing as the wicketkeeper instead of the injured Anthony Bramble.
Leon Johnson first put on 54 with opener, Assad Fudadin (25) then 85 with the reliable Chanderpaul that took the game away from the students. When Johnson was caught at third man in the 42nd over for 71 his team was just 31 runs away. Christopher Barnwell and Chanderpaul then hit off the runs without further drama to take four points and the second spot in the table.
It means that the Jaguars next match against table leaders, Barbados Pride on Sunday is a top of the table clash at the 3ws Oval on Sunday morning.
Leon Johnson who copped the Man of the Match award will be looking to continue in the same form to put book the Jaguars’ place in the final four.
