Guyanese Akilah Sekai Jones will match serves and rallies on the tennis court with Surinamese Kaeny de Mees when the two meet in the final of the Sheltez/Homesafe Security Independence Cup Under-12 international segment at about noon today at the Recreational Facility of the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI).
Jones qualified for the final yesterday after defeating Dutch player Payel Narain 4-1 4-1 in the second semifinal on day two of the tournament. Prior to her semifinal clash, she recorded convincing victories over Paula Kalekyezi: 5-3 4-1 in the quarterfinal, and Liza ven Essen: 6-1 on the opening day on Friday.
Meanwhile, de Mees had a much more difficult time in her semifinal match, eventually winning 4-4 (9-7) 4-1 against Guyanese Amba Persaud. However, in her previous outing, she defeated her Dutch counterpart Tamischa Bendter 6-1.
Local players Jeremiah Kalekyezi and Vadeanand Resaul booked their places in the boys’ Under-12 final with convincing wins against their respective opponents Wayne Baker and Dexter Koorndijk.
Kalekyezi won his match 4-1 4-0, while Resaul tamed his opponent to end on 4-2 4-1.
The boys’ Under-12 final is slated to commence shortly after the conclusion of the girls’ final.
In the day’s proceedings, there were several consolation matches in between the main draws. The following are results from consolation matches: Nandanee Ramdyhan defeated Zayna Qulander 6-3. Miniskhi Jaikisson defeated Liza van Essen 6-6 (7-3). Nigel Lowe defeated Tim van Leeuwen 6-3. Stiyn van Leeuwen defeated Jaydan Chan 6-1. Tamischa Bendter defeated Nandanee Ramdyhan 6-3.
Action in the tournament will continue from 8:30h today at the said venue.
