GEMS Theatre Productions in collaboration with The National School of Theatre Arts and Drama will be presenting one of Shakespeare’s most outstanding plays, “Julius Caesar” for secondary school children, especially those writing the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).
Written in 1599 but not published until after he died in 1616, Julius Caesar is considered to be his greatest tragedy when compared to King Lear, Othello and Macbeth. The play is very relevant today. It is being studied in the classroom for English Literature for the final term.
The Education Ministry, through the Allied Arts Department, has given its approval for this presentation. This stage production will serve as a refresher for those students before their final exams on May 12.
Fourth and Fifth Form students are also encouraged to attend the show, if they are studying Literature or Theatre Arts. Attending a Shakespearean production will be a memorable experience for students.
The young and energetic Director, Subraj Singh, is handling the Arena-style setting for the play with great skill, employing theatre in the round techniques with no blackouts during scene changes.
The action moves from one setting to the other, with much efficiency, utilising the large space available at the Sports Hall. The theatrical presentation will be staged at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on May 3, commencing at 10:00h. Admission is $500.
However, the public is welcome to attend at a cost of $1000. The show will feature some of the best in the theatrical business such as Mark Luke-Edwards, Nickose Layne, Clinton Duncan, Nurriyyih Gerrard, Nirmala Narine, Jamohl Alexander, Paul Budnah and Randolph Critchlow among others.
For tickets, persons are asked to contact the organisers on 226-0240, 225-3557, 617-0244 and 629-9895, or check with the National Cultural Centre’s box office.
