Juvenile released on self-bail

… spent days in adults’ cell at Anna Regina Police Station

A 16-year-old of Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, was on Wednesday released on self-bail on a simple larceny charge when he appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on April 17, 2016, the teen stole two cases of empty beer bottles from Gandi Rambarran.
The teenager, who was unrepresented, told the Court that he did not steal the empty bottles. He claimed that Police locked him up on Monday in a cell at the Anna Regina Police Station.
The Virtual Complainant then told the Court that the teenager would roam the streets of Anna Regina aimlessly.
Magistrate Scarce was surprised to learn that the teenager was in the same cell with adults. He asked the Station Sergeant why this was done and the Police Officer responded that the teen gave a different age to the officers when he was arrested. There were no objections to bail and the juvenile was released on self-bail.
The case will continue on May 24, 2016.
