ꟷ features $100K winner’s purse

Kings of Studies Football Tournament 2 commences today at the University of Guyana Turkeyen campus from 10:00 hrs. Playing will take place alongside the newly-constructed Behavioural Sciences Building.

Part of the action in last year’s event

The brainchild of Jafar Gibbons when he was a first-year student last year, this small-goal football tournament is focused on encouraging cross-faculty interaction by encouraging students to build their own teams.
More than 100 student-athletes comprising ten teams are participating in this tournament. Among the many participating teams are Royals FC, Saints, Renegades and Hala Madrid.
The teams ranked first, second and third would each be awarded a trophy, medals and cash incentives. The MVP of the tourney would receive a trophy, compliments of CNL Construction. The person scoring the most goals would receive a trophy, compliments of Robbie Rambaran.
This year, the tournament will feature a winning bonus of $100,000 along with trophies and medals. To add to this year’s excitement, a team from the Berbice Campus has been invited to participate.
The matches will be played in two five-minute halves and in a round-robin style, after which the knockout stage, comprising two semi-final games and the final game, would be staged.
Because this tournament is a one-day affair, all prizes won would be handed over on the day of its staging.
Now functioning as President of the University of Guyana Students Society (UGSS), Jafar Gibbons has expressed gratitude to the University of Guyana administrators for allowing this tournament to be held, and has disclosed that the team winning this competition would be obliged to make an investment of 10% of their winnings in a project of their choosing to enhance the environment at the University.
This event has received the support of Kashif and Shanghai, Bill Wilson and Colin Aaron, among others.
Gibbons has said that all the necessary permission has been obtained, and with all teams having submitted their names, fans can expect a thrilling day of football.
