Kingston 4X4 Streets Knockout Football competition a success

The Kingston Community 4X4 Streets Knockout Football Competition, a ‘friendly’ competition organised to build relations between the Georgetown ward of Kingston and contiguous communities, was held on Sunday 25th August at the Digicel Parking Lot at 6 Fort Street Kingston Georgetown.

The very first competition of its kind, it was deemed a success because many teams had participated for the bragging rights. Of the eight participating teams, three originated from Tiger Bay: Queen Street, Hope Street and New Market Street teams; while from the ward of Kingston came the Kingston United, Kingston Warriors, Kingston Masters, Fort St Kingston Warriors, and the Duke Street teams.
In the knockout round, four games were played among the 8 competing teams. In game 1, Hope Street edged Kingston Warriors 1-0 to move one step further in the competition. Game 2 saw New Market Street dominate Duke Street 3-0; while, in Game 3, Kingston Masters lost to Queen Street 0-3. The final knockout game went in favour of Kingston United, who won 2-0 over Fort St Kingston Warriors.
In the first semi-final game, Hope Street made light work of New Market Street, winning 1-0 to book their spot in the finale. The other semifinal saw Queen Street convincingly defeating Kingston United 4-1 to set up a clash with the New Market Street team.
In the grand finale, both teams were so evenly matched that, in the back-and-forth encounter, each registered one goal, to which neither could add anything at full time. Hope Street, however, won the finale 3-2 on penalty kicks, and earned bragging rights for the week.
Another such competition will be held on Sunday September 1 2019.
Meanwhile, in the first exhibition match, an under-11 affair, Tiger Bay defeated Kingston 3-2 on penalty kicks after their game had ended 1-1 at full time. In the final exhibition game, Kingston ‘A’ seniors hammered their Kingston ‘B’ counterparts to win 3-1.
Trophies for the event were sponsored by Digicel, Brazo Workshop and Donna Shop. This competition was organised by Leon Grumble, aka “Buckman”, and was supported by Junior Forrester and the Kingston crew.
