Kitty man jailed for gun possession

Mark Calvan, 24, of Lot 272 Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was on Wednesday sentenced to spend the next two years in prison when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He was on trial after the Police on January 28, in Georgetown, found him with a .32 pistol along with three rounds of matching ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.

The Prosecution’s case contended that on the day in questioned, Calvan was walking along the corners of Church and Cummings Streets, with another person when Police saw them acting suspiciously. A Police Officer approached them and both men fled. According to allegations made by the defendant, his companion was in possession of the gun and not him.

However, Prosecutor Deniro Jones explained that on the day in question, a Policeman approached the defendant, who started to run, but the Officer was able to catch up with him. The officer discovered that the defendant was in possession of the gun and the ammunition after conducting a search of his person.

The Prosecutor also informed that the defendant gave a wrong address to the Police. Magistrate Latchman stated that the evidence provided by the Prosecution proved that the defendant was guilty as charged.

As such, he was sentenced to two years for each of the charges; however, the sentences will run concurrently. He was also fined $100,000.
