Kitty man slapped with attempted robbery charge

A 36-year-old Georgetown man was on Friday remanded to prison after appearing at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court #2 in connection with an alleged attempted robbery under arms. Naipaul Basdeoram, of David Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was charged with attempt to commit a felony, “robbery under arms”, contrary to Section 36 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01. Basdeoram was arrested on August 29 in relation to the offence. He appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan on Friday where the indictable charge was read to him. He was not required to enter a plea. The court subsequently remanded Basdeoram to prison and the case was adjourned to October 9. Basdeoram’s charges are in relation to an attempted robbery at the home of a Director of Projects attached to the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA). Last week, three persons had also been charged with the attempted robbery. Yohance Carroll, 22 and Earl Grant, 23, from Tucville Squatting Area, Georgetown, along with Adrian Greenidge, 23, a security guard from Cane View Squatting Area, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on August 31. In addition, Greenidge and Grant were individually charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition. At court on Monday last, they were not required to plead to the charges and were remanded to prison. The case is set to continue on October 9. It was reported that on August 28, the victim was at his home when he exited through the western door to dispose of garbage, and as he returned inside and proceeded to checked his security cameras and observed four males entering his yard.
They were all wearing masks and approached the door, attempting to open it, but the victim immediately contacted the police and raised an alarm. However, acting on separate information received, police intercepted three males at Fisher Dam, Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo (EBE). During a search, they found a black firearm with three matching rounds of ammunition in a haversack that was allegedly being carried by Grant and as such, he was taken into custody. Police added that a further search was conducted on the other suspects, during which another firearm with three matching rounds of ammunition was allegedly found concealed on Greenidge. Basdeoram is also no stranger to the law. In 2015, he was charged for possession of a firearm and ammunition. In November 2015, he was granted $75,000 bail on a charge of receiving a stolen Guyana passport. During the same court appearance, Basdeoram pleaded guilty to illegally departing Guyana through Springlands, Berbice, an unofficial crossing, and was fined $30,000. The status and outcome of these matters could not be confirmed up to press time. He had previously faced allegations of manslaughter in Canada some years ago.
