…as several roads closed for commencement of 2nd phase
Ongoing construction works at the Kitty seawall roundabout – the first of its kind in Guyana – is 35 per cent complete, putting the project ahead of schedule for its June 2018 deadline.
This is according to Project Engineer, Sherod Parkinson, who said the Public Infrastructure Ministry and the contractor, S Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Construction Services, are taking all necessary steps to ensure that the project

progresses smoothly.
On Friday, another phase of the project kicked off. This phase required the closure of sections of the roadway to facilitate works. Among the works currently underway are the construction of the circulatory lanes, truck apron, and central island.
Meanwhile, the Ministry is working along with the Guyana Police Force to minimise traffic disruptions. As a result, several roads around the area have been closed to vehicular traffic.
These include: Carifesta Avenue heading East; Kitty Public Road heading West to Carifesta Avenue, and JB Singh Road heading North to Rupert Craig Highway.
Alternative roadways have been earmarked and drivers are advised to use these roads during this time. These are: the Seawall road; the bypass road connecting
Traffic is currently being diverted along the JB Singh Road as the Kitty Roundabout enters another phase towards its completion
JB Singh Road and Carifesta Avenue, and the bypass road connecting Kitty Public Road and Vlissengen Road.
Further, ccommuters heading North along JB Singh Road who are desirous of heading to the East Coast can detour at David Street.
The closures will be until further notice. This phase of works is expected to conclude in six to eight weeks.
Works on the Kitty roundabout began earlier this year after Cabinet gave its ‘no objection’ to the award of the $78.9 million contract to the construction company. Minister of State Joseph Harmon had said at a post Cabinet press briefing back in January that preliminary works were done in preparation of construction.
The decision to construct a roundabout at this busy junction was made after a sinkhole had formed nearby.
The roundabout will reduce waiting and stoppage time for motorists heading to the East Coast of Demerara and those using Carifesta Avenue, Vlissengen Road, and the Kitty Public Road.
When completed, the flow of traffic in the area is expected to significantly improve since vehicles heading to the East Coast of Demerara and those using Carifesta Avenue, Vlissengen Road, and the Kitty Public Road will no longer have to stop and wait on the traffic light.
