Knocked out!!! West Indies fail to overcome Sri Lanka
When they needed a win the most, they failed as a unit to achieve that feat. West Indies U19 were defeated by Sri Lanka, losing two of their three games as their bowling failed to penetrate the armour of Sri Lanka.
West Indies lost by three wickets and ten balls to spare as they could not defend 251 for victory.
Chasing a simple but yet challenging total, the men in maroon set out on their journey, and quick wickets is just what they got to give them a glimmer of hope. The Sri Lankans were at 96-3 and moving along slowly despite Shevon Daniel contributing 40. But a partnership between Sadisha Rajapaksa and Anjala Bandara propelled them to 174-4, even though the latter fell for 34.
Rajapaksa then fell for a well-played 76, as he was dismissed by Isai Thorne. Thorne and Shiva Sankar bagged one more each, and the Sri Lankans were in trouble, needing 50 off 59 with just four wickets in hand.
However, a lack of penetration from the West Indies, and some sturdy batting from Ranuda Somarathne who scored 28 not out, guided the Sri Lankans over the line and put them on top of the Group D table with three wins from three matches.
Bowling for the West Indies, Nathan Edwards and Shiva Sankar each took 1-50, McKenny Clarke took 2-38, Isai Thorne took 2-41, and Giovonte Depeiza took 1-32.
West Indies had earlier got off to a poor start, losing Matthew Nandu for 7, and Shaqkere Parris when the score was on 34-2; but Teddy Bishop (45), Kevin Wickham (56), Jordan Johnson (47) and Rivaldo Clarke (45) led the resurgence and gave the Windies something to fight for. McKenny Clarke rounded off the innings with 21 from 12 to help the West Indies post 250-9 on the board.
Bowling for Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage took 3-39, Matheesha Pathirana took 2-67 and Treveen Mathew took 1-38.
