Kwakwani businessman charged for ganja trafficking
A Kwakwani, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) businessman was on Monday hauled before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of narcotics trafficking after he was allegedly busted with a quantity of ganja.
Ancel John, a shop owner, denied that on November 22, 2018 at Kwakwani Water Front, Upper Berbice River, he had 110 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
In court on Monday, the 33-year-old man claimed that he was beaten by Police
and articles from his store were stolen during his arrest. Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield made no objections to bail being granted, but asked that conditions be attached.
The Chief Magistrate released John on $50,000 bail. As a condition for bail, he is required to report to the Kwakwani Police Station every Friday until completion of his trial. The case will continue on December 22, 2018 at the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court.
