…suspects nabbed as Police find car in mechanic shop

A young mason from Unity Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara (WBD) died on Tuesday night after he was struck down by a speeding car on the La Grange Public Road.

Dead is 25-year-old Imran Abdul of Lot 24 Unity Street. The accident occurred just about 21:40h.
The Police, in a statement, said that while walking home along the Public Road, Abdul was hit from behind by a speeding vehicle which was proceeding in the same direction. As a result of the collision, the young man fell to the eastern parapet, where he sustained injuries to his head and back, and the vehicle drove away leaving him there.
He was later picked up and taken by the Police to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
When Guyana Times visited the home of the dead man, his grieving father, Shazamudeen Azeez, related that his son had left home to go visit friends and family. He said they were informed that Abdul met his demise after he left his brother’s home and visited a friend at Palmer Street, on the border of the La Grange and Meerzorgen villages.
“Around 9 something, a car come and stop in front here and say he get accident and he lay down pon the road. So, the mother send the elder son, because he could hoist he and move he and thing. When he go there, he just called back and said he didn’t make it,” Azeez related.
Azeez explained that persons in the area said they heard a loud noise and saw a silver-coloured car speeding away.
“Like the car pick he up and pelt he across the road. He leff home and went couple other places. He went by Goed Fortuin Squatting Area and then we went by some other friend in Sideline Dam and from there he was coming out and that was when the car pick he up.
“The people them said that them nah see how he get the accident, but them hear a big noise and see a silver-ish car driving away. But we hear that them Police get the car,” the grieving man related.

Car found
The Police said they have found a vehicle they suspected was involved in the accident. They have since taken it from a mechanic shop in Belle West, Canal Number Two, WBD, and are investigating the incident. According to Police, the 32-year-old driver of Stanleytown, WBD, has been taken into custody along with two other persons.
The family is contending that the car belongs to the son of a popular funeral home owner, but was rented to the driver who operated it as a taxi.
Azeez described his son as a peaceful child.
The body is presently at Ezekiel Funeral Parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination.
