La Parfaite Harmonie Health Centre returns to former state

About three months ago, Guyana Times reported on the insanitary conditions at the La Parfaite Harmonie Health Centre, where the washroom had no doors and no proper flowing water and grass was as tall as four feet in some sections of the compound.

Minister, Dr Karen Cummings. However, three months later, the Centre has returned to its former state with the grass as tall as three feet, no running water and no medication for patients.
On Wednesday, this publication revisited the La Parfaite Harmonie Health Centre, where it was observed that in addition to overgrown grass, the dumping of garbage continued at the back of the facility and there was an inadequate water supply.
Additionally, a source within the Health Centre told this newspaper that the facility did not have drugs to treat the patients. It was related that the nurses were forced to turn away pregnant mothers and the elderly since the medication supply was almost exhausted.
Efforts to contact Minister Cummings and the Regional Executive Officer, Dennis Jaikarran, proved futile.
When Guyana Times initially visited the health-care facility, in addition to a bushy compound and the aforementioned conditions, there was garbage at the back of the yard that was poorly disposed of – an attempt to burn the garbage was evident, but the fire did not destroy most of it. In addition, there were no rubbish bins in the compound, while the water tank and trestle were surrounded by bushy vegetation, with no water flowing through the standpipe in the front of the yard.
After the initial report on the state of the facility was published, the Regional Administration hurriedly had the yard weeded, the plumbing redone and garbage bins installed. This was all done to facilitate Minister Cummings’ visit to the facility, where she said that she was pleased with the conditions at the Health Centre.
Additionally, the Deputy Regional Executive Officer, Jennifer Ferreira-Dougall, refuted the report, although photographic evidence was published.
