Labour Ministry probing death of teen worker

The Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Department of the Labour Ministry has launched an inquiry into an accident that transpired on Tuesday at Industrial Fabrications Incorporated (InFab Inc).
That accident has led to the death of Javid Shaw, a 17-year-old junior site worker of Dochfour, East Coast Demerara.

Dead: Javid Shaw

The accident occurred at 8:45h on Tuesday at the InFab Inc construction site on Lama Avenue, Bel Air Park. It was reported that Shaw was in the process of descending from the third/fourth floor of a five-storey building to retrieve painting supplies from the ground floor when he fell to his death.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, OSH officers visited the site and engaged the relevant authorities. Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton, in a statement on Tuesday, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and friends of the departed young worker.
He took the opportunity to emphasise the critical importance of promoting workplace safety and health practices for both employers and workers. Such practices, he said, are essential to prevent similar incidents that could lead to the loss of loved ones.
Hamilton has also affirmed that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out to address the many questions that linger in the wake of the teen’s death. (G9)
