Labourer charged for murder of Port Kaituma miner

A labourer, who is accused of beating a Port Kaituma, Region One (Barima-Waini) miner to death, was on Tuesday slapped with the charge and appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

Godfrey Christopher Ferreira of Ogle Old Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert, who read the indictable charge. The prosecution is contending that on May 27 at Arrangay Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), the 24-year-old man killed David James.
According to reports, the incident occurred at about 18:30h, when an argument erupted between James and another employee who were imbibing at their worksite. Reports are as the argument escalated, the man’s colleague left but later returned with Ferreira, who attacked James. This resulted in James falling to the ground. Police ranks were summoned to the scene where James was found dead in a hammock with injuries to his neck, face, and about his body.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination conducted on the body of James by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh revealed that he died from a brain haemorrhage due to blunt trauma to the head.
Magistrate Lambert remanded Ferreira to prison and the case will continue on July 7, 2020.
