Labourer dies 1 month after falling from scaffold

One month after falling from a 10-foot scaffold at Imam Bacchus and Sons Limited at Affiance, Essequibo Coast, 27-year-old Domindra Narayan of Columbia, Essequibo Coast succumbed to his injuries on Friday, while receiving treatment at the Suddie Public Hospital in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Narayan, who had been employed as a labourer at the company, had been washing a building on January 9 when he reportedly slipped off the scaffold and landed on the concrete ground, sustaining severe head injuries from that fall. He had been admitted a patient at the Suddie Public Hospital after the incident, but his condition worsened, and he reportedly took his last breath on Friday.
Occupational Safety and Health Officer Naipaul Persaud, who has responsibility for Region Two, is currently investigating this incident, as is Regional Labour Officer Ravi Persaud. A release from the Labour Ministry said Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton has expressed concern about workers being injured on the job, and has emphasised the need for workplaces to institute safety and health practices so that employees can be safe at work.
Minister Hamilton has said the Labour Ministry, through its OSH Department, is aggressively tackling unsafe workplace conditions and unsafe work practices through inspections and audits, in order to reduce the number of accidents that occur.
He has also expressed sincere condolences to the Narayan family.
