Labourer slapped with ganja trafficking charge

A 42-year-old labourer was on Monday arraigned for trafficking in narcotics when he appeared at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.

Charged: Steve Pearson

Steve Pearson of Tabatinga, Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson and denied the charge when it was read to him.
The court heard that on May 24, at approximately 22:15h, Police ranks were patrolling the Tabatinga area when they observed Pearson standing on the roadway.
Given the fact that the man was in breach of the national COVID-19 curfew, he was subjected to a search. During the search, lawmen discovered a transparent plastic bag containing cannabis seeds and stems.
He was then arrested and taken to the Lethem Police Station, where the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to 44 grams. He reportedly admitted ownership of the illicit substance.
Magistrate Wilson released him on $75,000 bail. The case will continue on June 15, 2020.
