Labourer stabbed to death, teen slashed to face in alleged robbery
A construction worker was on Saturday evening killed while another was injured after they were attacked during a robbery attempt at Albion, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
The dead man was identified as 29-year-old Orlando Jonas of Number One Village Corentyne, Berbice, while the injured man is Mahendra Ramnarine, 18, also of the same village.
Based on information received, the now dead man and Ramnarine were riding home, and in the vicinity of a popular shop in the area, they were attacked by the men who attempted to relieve them of their personal items.
Jonas retaliated by putting up a fight but was stabbed by one of the men. Upon seeing this, Ramnarine went to his aid and was also injured to his face. Ramnarine reportedly ran away from the scene to get assistance, leaving Jonas fighting with the two men. Eventually, Ramnarine met his brother at a shop and related what took place.
The two men along with others rushed to the scene where they saw Jonas lying on the roadway in a pool of blood. He was picked up and taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
An aunt of the now dead man told Guyana Times that she received the dreaded news and immediately went to the Port Mourant Hospital where she saw her nephew’s motionless body.
“I saw he had a huge gash to his face. He had a stab to his tummy because his intestine was coming out and I think there was another stab wound on his neck,” she disclosed.
However, according to Ramnarine, who was slashed to his face, he was riding in front of Jonas when they were attacked. He explained that Jonas turned back to his attackers after a verbal exchange.
“After he turn around, I turn around with my bicycle and by the time dem man did done bore he.” He said the bandits were not able to get anything from him,” he explained.
This publication understands that the two men, who carried out the brutal attack on Jonas and Ramnarine, turned up at the Albion Police Station claiming that they were attacked and robbed.
They were nevertheless arrested. Meanwhile, Ramnarine’s father, Parsuran, believes that it is a case of mistaken identity. According to him, he is a contractor and both Jonas and his son work with him.
He explained that on Saturdays he would normally pay workers after which he would ride home with his son but on the day in question, he was picked up by his nephew and would have given Jonas his bicycle to ride home.
“I would normally have money on me on Saturdays when I am going home, but it was not me riding the bicycle… it was Lano… but with the face masks you can’t tell who is who so I believe that the perpetrators took Lano for me and carried out the attack,” he explained.
The now dead father of one was described as a cool and humble young man. Police are continuing their investigations. (Andrew Carmichael)
