Labourers charged in separate drug, larceny offences
Two labourers from different regions of the country were hauled before the courts this week in separate criminal matters involving drug possession and larceny.
In the first matter, 24-year-old labourer, Devon Greaves of Siriki, Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. The charge stems from an incident on Wednesday July 9, when Greaves was intercepted by police at Charity, Essequibo Coast. A search conducted on his person allegedly revealed 28.2 grams of cocaine.

Greaves appeared before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where the charge was formally read to him. He entered a plea of not guilty. However, the prosecution objected to bail and the Magistrate subsequently ordered that he be remanded to prison. The case has been adjourned to August 11 for disclosure of statements.

Meanwhile, in a separate matter on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), Kamalall Lachminarine, a labourer from Enterprise Garden, was charged with simple larceny. The offence reportedly took place on July 7, and was committed against a woman identified as Tara Mohan. Lachminarine appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court #1, where he also pleaded not guilty. He was granted self-bail and the matter was adjourned to a later date.
Both matters remain active before the courts as investigations continue.
