Over $700 million from Central Government and the Citizen Security Strengthening Programme will be dedicated to the modernisation of several Police Stations across the country.
This is according to Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan, who made the disclosure recently at the commissioning ceremony of the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
He stated that Government would be providing $260 million for the rehabilitation of the Brickdam Police Station, Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica); the Leonora Police Station, Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara); the Special Branch Unit building in Georgetown; the Cove and John Police Station in Region Four and the reconstruction of the Anna Regina Police Station headquarters, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
The monies would also cater for the construction of the Fort Wellington Police Station, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); the Mabaruma Police Station Headquarters building, Region One (Barima-Waini); Golden Grove Police Station Divisional Headquarters, Region Four, and the Mahdia Police Station Headquarters in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).
“But we also had gotten monies form Citizen Security Strengthening Programme and this year … will see $80 million going towards the Mahdia Police Station, Wismar Police Station a sum in that equivalent about $80 million, Parika Police Station $59 million, Baramita gets $77 million and Albion Police Station will get $80.9 million. The Whim Police Station also being the beneficiary of $81.3 million, all to ensure that these facilities are brought to almost brand-new status if not brand-new status,” he stated.
He emphasised that although training of Police ranks was integral in ensuring that quality security services were provided by the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the ranks should be provided with the necessary assets so that they can execute their functions effectively.
“So that when trained they will utilise these assets for even improved services to the community … we need comfortable and pleasing circumstances in which they operate – their working conditions…”
