Home Sports LGC to host 2 tourneys along with honours ceremony
As mentioned in our previous issue, today and Sunday, the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) will devote activities to honour both the lifetime achievements of some of its outstanding members along with the celebration of birthdays of Maurice Solomon and Hemraj Kissoon.
This weekend’s activities will also feature two tournaments, with the first, on Saturday, teeing off from 12:30 hrs; and the other, on Sunday, teeing off from 8:30 hrs. As has become the norm, prizes will be awarded to the top two finishers in three categories, but this weekend will feature a special fourth category – a Seniors Flight – in honour of the awardees.
Hemraj Kissoon
Kissoon, past President of the LGC, has been a leader in several industries, including banking and business. One of nine children, he took over Kissoons’ Furniture Company after his brother passed away, and built it into the major company it presently is.
Growing up in No. 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Hemraj has demonstrated that a person is a product of imagination and hard work, and not of their environment; as, today, the Kissoon Group of Companies is a distinct and prestigious conglomerate with a long history of successful operations in Guyana.
The Kissoon Group is a foremost example of astute business diversification, foresight, and long-term strategic planning, for which Hemraj has made a distinctive contribution.
Kissoons’ Furniture and subsequently the Kissoon Group have, for many years, been annual sponsors of the LGC, with Hemraj being an advocate of the expansion of the game to include more business leaders, diplomats and young people.
Always one to match his action with his talk, Hemraj, as President of this Golf Club, led it through a major transformation, the removal of the original Clubhouse from where it was, and the establishment of the current clubhouse some 300 yards away, placing it central to the golf course. He continues to offer good counsel to Club administrations of recent vintage.
As he celebrates his birth anniversary in February, members of the Club are pleased to have among themselves Hemraj’s continued presence, support, and cheerful disposition, and do look forward to enjoying his warm personality for many years to come.
Maurice Solomon
Maurice Solomon has been a member of the Lusignan Golf Club for over 50 years, and was recently awarded life membership.
As head of Maurice Solomon & Co., a firm founded in 1998 with Maurice Solomon as the sole partner, this man’s astute ability to build a major business has amply been demonstrated.
The firm now comprises a staff of over twenty (20), including fully qualified Chartered Accountants, and offers professional services in audit assurance, taxation, corporate services, accounting and payroll, business advisory services, recruitment and management consulting services for many major companies, including several in the emerging oil & gas market.
An avid golfer who plays at least three times per week, Maurice is a living example of how good genes, a healthy lifestyle, and a strong, competitive spirit form the key to longevity.
Maurice also sponsors the annual Maurice Solomon & Co. Golf tournament, and has willingly contributed to the development of the club over the past years.
Robert Hanoman
A longtime member of the LGC, who has played a key role in securing sponsorship from Muneshwer’s Travel, Maersk Shipping, and Guyana Shorebase Inc. over the years, is Robert Hanoman.
One of the leading legal minds in the country, Robert boasts the distinction of possibly being the only Guyanese lawyer to be qualified in London, New York and California, and he has often expressed that those bar exams were much easier than the game of golf!
Robert has consistently provided legal advice and guidance, along with financial contributions, to the Club over the many years that he has been there.
In 2019, he was awarded life membership in recognition of his years of involvement and dedication to the growth of the Club and sport.
Robert will also celebrate another milestone in March, and is pleased that currently his game is at its best level…his having shot 63, his lowest net score in history, last February.
