Limacol Schools Football League set for Sunday kick-off
Eight secondary school football teams from around the country will have the opportunity to display their skills in the league format when the Limacol Schools Football League kicks off this Sunday.
Powered by the New GPC Inc and coordinated by the Petra Organization, this league has seen automatic qualification for the top 8 schools that competed in the Milo Schools’ Football tournament which concluded earlier this year.
The 7-week Limacol Schools Football League was launched on Tuesday morning at the National Library’s Boardroom in Georgetown, and New GPC Marketing Manager Elizabeth Ram has underscored the importance of providing students with such programmes even as she expressed confidence in the organizers’ abilities.
“We are pleased to be here today to support the Petra Organization and to connect with them for the fourth annual Limacol Football League. We adore the organization’s continued effort to offer athletics to the young generations, especially during these difficult times. Football is a sport that requires perseverance, discipline and dedication, and we wish the teams that are participating all the best,” Ram shared.

She added, “We want to encourage the schools, the children who are participating in these competitions, to remain respectful, humble, and true to yourself; and to keep that within the sport.”
In the league format, each team would play all of the other 7 teams in the competition, with the winner being decided by the amount of points accumulated.
Petra Co-Director Troy Mendonca, in thanking all the stakeholders involved in the tournament, touched briefly on the importance of exposing young players to this format.
“As you would know, a tournament of this nature brings out the best in you, because everybody has to play each other. Ideally, we should have 2 rounds, but due to the different constraints, we’ll play one round,” Mendonca related.
“The Directors of Petra are forever thankful for the support given by the Ministry of Education; the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport; the Guyana Football Federation; head-teachers, teachers, coaches and players. And to our sponsor, New GPC, through its Limacol brand,” Mendonca further stated.
Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Competitions Director Troy Peters had many words of praise, not only for the organizers and sponsors, but also the quality of football to expect.
Peters remarked, “Petra continues to be a trailblazer in the promotion and development of youth football. The organization relationship with the Ministry of Education and other key stakeholders has seen a tremendous growth of football among our youths.
More importantly, this tournament will bring together the cream of our young footballers, many of whom are already competing in the NAMILCO U17 tournament run by the Federation.
“We look forward to a very competitive tournament, with fair play being the key words,” he declared,
concluding, “I must also commend the NEW GPC, through its brand Limacol, which is a household name, for being the main sponsor.”
The Limacol Schools Football League will kick off this Sunday, October 29, at the Ministry of Education (MOE) Ground on Carifesta Avenue in Georgetown with four games. The opening game
pits Christianburg-Wismar Secondary against the Bartica Secondary from 12:00hrs, while Digicel 2023 Champions Carmel Secondary do battle with Mackenzie High School from 13:30hrs. At 15:00hrs, East Ruimveldt Secondary will lock horns with Chase’s Academy, while Ann’s Grove Secondary will go toe-to-toe with Milo 2023 Champions Santa Rosa Secondary from 16:30hrs.
According to the organizers, the top three or four teams from the Limacol League will secure a spot in Petra’s year-end Goodwill Series.
The teams will be playing for a grand prize of $300,000 for a school project, while second- third- and fourth- placed teams would respectively receive $150,000, $75,000 and $50,000 for the same purpose. Individual prizes would also be up for grabs.
