Linden duo granted $400,000 bail each for allegedly killing labourer

Thirty-four-year-old Orlando Montooth and Utah Duke, 27, of Victory Valley, Wismar, Linden, were jointly charged for killing Samuel DeSouza during an altercation on March 6, 2021.
The men were granted bail in the sum of $400,000 each by Magistrate Wanda Fortune on Tuesday when the duo appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court. The matter was adjourned until April 22, 2021.

Murder suspect: Utah Duke

DeSouza, 44, a labourer of Victory Valley, was killed between 21:00h and 21:30h on the day in question.
It was reported that the now dead man, who lived alone, was involved in an altercation with a female, who along with her daughter had confronted him.
He subsequently ran away through a track leading to his home but soon after the suspects informed the woman and her daughter that DeSouza was dead.
The matter was reported and upon arriving at the scene, the Police observed the deceased lying on his back in front of his home.
A bloodstained spear with a wooden handle, which is suspected to be the murder weapon, was found resting on the man’s body. Three knives and a screwdriver were also found in the waist of the deceased’s pants.

According to Police, his mouth and right ear had what appeared to be blood as well as superficial bruises on the exposed parts of his body.
The two females were arrested and placed into custody following the discovery but were subsequently released. Nevertheless, based on Police investigations, the two suspects were arrested and charged.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem performed on the now dead man’s body proved that he died from hypotension and gastritis.
Dr Singh had explained that the internal bleeding was caused by frequent movement of the deceased which led to hypotension. The doctor also added that this was caused by the deceased’s smoking and alcohol consumption which was found in his stomach.
