Linden man jailed for causing death by dangerous driving

Lindener Jermaine Jackson was on Wednesday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after he was found guilty of the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.
The 24-year-old was found guilty for the 2018 road death of 25-year-old Intieaz Mohamed.
The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Linden Magistrate’s Court. Jackson, a miner of Lot 218 Wisroc Housing Scheme, had initially pleaded guilty to the offence but then changed his plea.
Mohamed, who was a labourer of Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, was lying on the roadway at about 03:00h on December 16, 2018, when he was run over by a hire car, HC 8814, which was driven by Jackson.
The court, during the trial, heard that Jackson told investigators at the time that he was blinded by the bright light of an oncoming vehicle. He noted that as a result, he drove over Mohamed who was lying at the side of the road. According to reports, Jackson had stopped for a while but drove away sometime later. The deceased was later picked up by an ambulance and taken to the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Jackson later turned himself in at the Wismar Police Station where he told investigators what transpired and was arrested and charged. A Post-Mortem Examination (PME) which was later conducted on the body of the deceased gave the cause of death as multiple crushing injuries consistent with a motor vehicular accident.
