Twelve-year-old Janae Bristol of the Bishops’ High School is Linden’s new Junior Mayor. Bristol, who is a former student of the Regma Primary School, was selected by a panel on Saturday evening after she and six other students from various schools across Linden contested for the post at the Linden Mayor and Town Council.
The other members of the Junior Council who competed include Quasha Lewis, who represented the Christianburg Primary; Aneesa Algernon, who represented the Mackenzie Primary; Nyocie Feidtkou, who represented the Amelia’s Ward Primary; Carlisa Stellington, who represented the Amelia’s Ward Primary; Kenson Jennings, who represented the Watooka Day Primary and Natassia Ashby represented One Mile Primary School.
Following their introductory presentations, the students were each asked: “if they were to become Junior Mayor what is one thing that they would see change in their community or school or both”. They were judged by a panel and were each awarded tablets as tokens, compliments of the Telecommunications Ministry.
In her remarks, Bristol noted that she was happy to be the first female Junior Mayor of Linden as she advocated for women to be leaders in society.
“In my opinion, females should start rising up. We can do things that males can do too…I’m happy that I will be helping to make Linden a better place for the next generation to come”, she posited.
The Linden’s Junior Mayor and Council has a motto which states, “Continuity in leadership at the local level”.
