Linden resident slapped with gun, ammo possession charges
Mabura $3.4M robbery
As Police continue their investigation into the robbery committed on a Mabura, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) businesswoman and her husband, Colis Jerrick of the mining town was slapped with a gun possession charge.
Jerrick made his appearance before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Linden Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The suspect was caught by Police following the robbery on Tuesday last.
During his court appearance, he pleaded not guilty to the charges which stated that on the day in question, he had a .38 Special Revolver with 5 live rounds of ammunition without being the holder of a licence.
Based reports received, on Wednesday last, at about 10:00h, Police ranks acting on information regarding the robbery of the couple travelled to 47 Miles, Mabura Trail and based on further information they went to 58 Miles Mabura Trail where the accused was confronted.
Upon seeing the police ranks, he discharged a round at the ranks. Soon after he reportedly disposed of the firearm which was subsequently retrieved.
The accused was implicated in the armed robbery committed on the 49-year-old businesswoman and her husband. He was, however, taken into custody and charged.
It was reported that on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, the victims went about their business and upon returning home, they were confronted by an armed man. The suspect reportedly held the woman at gunpoint and demanded that she hand over the handbag she was carrying.
The woman reportedly put up some resistance but the armed man discharged several rounds in the air after which he relieved the woman of the bag containing $3.4 million in cash, a quantity of raw gold valued $800,000 and a wedding band.
The man then joined his accomplice, who was waiting on a motorcycle, and fled the scene. After the men left, the couple entered the home and in so doing, they discovered that two smartphones and a GPS were taken from the ransacked home.
The police were contacted and based on information received, went to a location in Mabura where they saw a parked black XR motorcycle fitting the description of the one used to commit the robbery. The ranks then combed the area during which they saw the accused running into the thick vegetation but not before discharging several rounds.
He was eventually arrested. At the time, he was carrying a bag containing $2,330,000, a digital scale, two cell phones and one .38 Special Revolver with 5 live rounds.
The motorcycle used in the robbery was the one that was reportedly stolen from a 30-year-old plant operator of Buck Hall, Wismar Squatting Area.
Meanwhile, Jerrick was remanded to prison until December 16 while the police seek legal advice on armed robbery charges.
