– defending champs Milerock, Winners Connection victorious
The Linden teams in the 2nd annual Petra Organised Limacol round-robin knock-out football tournament have certainly made their presence know with three commanding victories.
Following Eagles FC 2-1 win over Uitvlugt on Friday evening at the Leonora Stadium, defending champions Milerock and Federal Winners Connection notched commanding victories on Saturday evening at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC), Bourda.
Milerock, who had stuttering start to their campaign last year, had an authoritative showing against a youthful and talented Northern Rangers, winning 2-1 via goals from Troy Lewis and Akeem Green.
Lewis opened the scoring for the champions with a spectacular free- kick from the on the edge of the penalty area that rocketed into the top half of the net in the 10th minute.
The men in green and black were not satisfied as they were relentless in their pursuit for another goal but some steely defending and nippy counter-attacks by the Rangers kept the game in the balance.
Favour finally found Milerock, as Green orchestrated his own counter attack, with a solo effort down the left wing, unleashing a classical kick with his right foot, beating the diving keeper in the 45th.
Rangers certainly had an invigorating second half, threating the Linden’s defence on multiple occasions but a lack of organized set pieces thwarted any fruitful chances.
Devon Johnson introduction late in the second half had an immediate effect on the game, with his first run at goal needing the keeper to enact a diving response.
Johnson eventually scored from a free-kick 20 yards from goal in the 90+1, giving his side a much needed consolation goal.
In the earlier match, Winners Connection won 3-1 via strikes from Gary Thompson (13th), Sedrick Hunte (32nd) and Rawle Gittens (69th) while Kevin Padmore scored in the 78th for Grove Hi-Tech.
Tonight, action will continue at the same venue with Winners Connection playing Rangers from 18:30 hrs followed by Guyana Police Force FC against Camptown from 20:30 hrs.
The top teams are competing for a $500,000 first place prize while second to third will receive $250,000, $125,000 and $75,000 respectively.
In addition, the top teams in the groups will be rewarded $100,000, $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000.
Other than title sponsors Limacol, the organisers have also managed to gain the support of Bank DIH under their GT Beer brand, Star Party Rentals and Trophy Stall.
Admission to the venue is $500.
