Linden trio remanded for raping volunteer

The three Lindeners accused of raping an overseas volunteer were on Monday remanded to prison by City Magistrate Judy Latchman when they appeared before her jointly charged with rape.

Anthony VanDembury of Wismar Housing Scheme, Seon Alexander of Blueberry Hill, Linden, and a 16-year-old juvenile were not required to plea to the indictable charge.

The men were refused bail and the matter adjourned and transferred to Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for June 7.

According to reports, the incident occurred on May 6 at Kwakwani, Linden. The young volunteer who is in Guyana to teach children in Leguan, Essequibo River area, had ventured to Kwakwani to visit other volunteers, when the rape occurred.

Reports are the young woman went to a bar with some friends where she was accosted by the men who took her into a house and raped her.

The volunteer had told investigators that she had a few drinks and the men took advantage of her. The woman also noted she saw her attackers’ faces during the incident.
