Lindener jailed on gun, ammo charges

Junior Melville, of Silvertown, Wismar, Linden, was sentenced to three years behind bars on Tuesday by Magistrate Clive Nurse after entering a guilty plea to charges of having unlicensed firearms and ammunition in his possession.
The 29-year-old defendant made his final appearance at the Linden Magistrate’s Court where the sentence was handed down. The Court heard that Melville was intercepted at a Police road block on August 1, 2015 at Old England, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), where it was discovered that he had a quantity of cash and two unlicensed firearms – a .38 and a .32 revolver – and ammunition. He was subsequently arrested after being told of the offences.
Melville, who had initially pleaded not guilty to the offences, changed his plea earlier this month on all three separate charges and was remanded to prison.
Magistrate Nurse, in handing down the sentence, told the defendant that he took into consideration the fact that he did not waste the Court’s time and he had a fair prison report. The Magistrate said he hoped that the time Melville spent at the Camp Street Prison helped him to make up his mind regarding the direction he wanted to take in the future.
The defendant was sentenced to a fine of ,000 and three years for each offence; however, the sentences will run concurrently.
Magistrate Nurse also stated that he took into consideration the 10 months the defendant spent on remand which will be subtracted from the three-year prison sentence.
