A Blueberry Hill, Linden man was on Monday slapped with a causing death by dangerous driving charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Ron Cole was slapped with the charge which stated that on April 11, at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, he drove his motor car GRR 9355 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Police Constable Kelvin La Fleur. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the Court that the Policeman was at the time directing traffic when he was struck down by the 40-year-old defendant. The 25-year-old La Fleur, who was attached to the Providence Police Station at the time of his demise, succumbed to the injuries three days after the accident.
According to reports received, the traffic rank was in the process of crossing some schoolchildren when he was struck by the Canter truck which was overtaking another vehicle. Following the accident, La Fleur sustained injuries to both hands and a broken right leg. He was discharged from Georgetown Public Hospital, but owing to persistent pains, he was rushed back to the medical facility on Thursday morning. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
Prosecutor Jones objected to bail citing the seriousness of the offence and the gravity of the penalty. He also related to the court that the case file was incomplete.
Magistrate McLennan has suspended the defendant’s licence.
The case will continue on May 6.
