The local cricket fraternity is mourning the passing of a stalwart of Berbice cricket, Dhieranidranauth Somwaru, also known as Sir Sam or Big Sam. He was the former President of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and a former First-Class Umpire.
Somwaru dedicated a significant part of his life to the development and administration of cricket in Berbice and Guyana. His contributions to the sport, both as an administrator and an umpire, will forever remain a part of Berbice cricket’s rich history.
His invaluable contributions and dedicated service to cricket and the wider community at large will always be remembered by everyone.
“We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him during his years of service to cricket,” the BCB said.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

The West Indies Cricket Umpires Association (WICUA) also mourned the passing of the longstanding and respected member of the cricket umpiring fraternity.
In paying tribute, WICUA President Vivian Johnson stated:
“I am saddened at the passing of D Somwaru. He was a First-Class Umpire for many years and represented Guyana at a number of conventions as their delegate.
D Somwaru was a quiet and respected umpire and played a pivotal role in the 2007 convention held in Guyana.”
On behalf of the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association (WICUA), I, Mr Vivian Johnson, President of WICUA, wish to honour Mr Somwaru for his years of dedicated service, his invaluable contributions to cricket umpiring, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.”
May he rest in peace.”
