The sixth edition of the Kadir Mohamed Memorial Road Race is set for Sunday October 15 and will attract the country’s top cyclists as the lucrative first prize is one ounce of raw gold.
With over a million dollars in prizes across five different categories, the race is sure to be intense and packed with quality. Guyana’s lone professional cyclist, Geron Williams is back on home soil and competed during the past weekend where he took top honours, surely he will be in the hunt for that ounce of gold.
However, to predict a winner for that race would be whimsical as there is Raynauth “Obeah Man” Jeffrey also back on the local scene as well as Jamaul John who is currently at the top of the Classification table. The likes of Paul DeNobrega, Raul Leal and Alanzo Ambrose will also have their eye on the top podium spot, cycling fans can look forward to a highly competitive and entertaining race.
The race will begin from Homestretch Avenue at 07:30h then proceed to Dora on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway before returning to the point of origin for the finish at Homestretch Avenue. The Junior and Open category riders will make the trip to Dora but the Veterans, Mountain Bikers and Juveniles will turn back just past Splashmins.
In the Open category, first place finisher will win the ounce of gold while second to eight placed riders will receive cash prizes. The first to fourth placed junior riders, first to third placed Veteran and juvenile riders will be awarded cash prizes as well. There will be 10 sprint point prizes up for grabs as well.
The event is organized by the relatives of the late Kadir Mohamed in collaboration with the Flying Stars Cycling Club and is in its sixth year. Mohamed was an avid sports fan who hailed from Bartica, the race was organized as a memorial and is designed to further develop the talents of seasoned campaigners as well as to attract new blood to the sport.
