Lower Corentyne snatch lead after intense 3rd round
Lower Corentyne destroyed neighbors Upper Corentyne by 8 wickets to claim the number one spot following the end of round 3 in the 2017 GCB/Jaguars 50 overs League on Saturday.
Batting first at the at the Port Mourant Ground, Upper Corentyne struggled as they posted 141 all out off 35.3 overs with former national limited overs batsman Rajiv Ivan scoring 55 while Guyana Jaguars wicket-keeper/batsman Anthony Bramble and David Latchaya scored 28 and 18 respectively.
Bowling for Lower Corentyne, fast-bowler Nial Smith snared 3-26, while Royston Crandon 3-16 and Kassim Khan 2-30 had good returns. The defending champs raced to 143 for 2 off 24 overs after Johnathan Foo slammed an unbeaten 79 with Sharaz Ramcharran scoring 55 not out during their unbroken partnership of 129.
Over at the Bush Lot ground, West Demerara beat West Demerara by one wicket in a thriller. West Berbice made 173 off 36 overs with Sherwyn Mc Pherson resisting with 44, while Steffon Adams made an unbeaten 30. Tagenarine Chanderpaul showed his class with the ball to grab 4-31 while Richie Looknauth grabbed 3-11.
Needing 174 for victory off 50 overs, West Demerara reached 174 for 9 off 49.4 after Chanderpaul returned to stroke 56 with support from Mahendra Dhanpaul 48 and Safraz Esau 47.Waquar Hassan 3-19, Kevin Sinclair 2-12 and Krishandat Ramoo 2-23; were the top wicket-takers for West Berbice.
At the Imam Bacchus ground, Essequibo continued their dominance, hammering East Bank by 8 wickets after the latter only managed 104 in 45.2 overs. Skipper and West Indies U19 selectee Ronaldo Ali Mohamed made 37 and Sachin Singh 18.
Bowling for Essequibo, left-arm spinner Ricardo Adams grabbed 3 for 17, while skipper Anthony Adams and his younger brother Akini Adams; snatched 3 for 17 and 2 for 13 respectively. Essequibo in reply, reached 105 for 2 off just 26.4 overs with Kemol Savory smashing 64 and the veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul making 20 not out.
At Enterprise, Georgetown won their first match of the tournament after beating East Coast by 8 wickets. East Coast struggled to reach a good score, ending on 120 runs in 42.5 overs with Chanderpaul Hemraj top scoring with 27 while Amir Khan chipped in with 18 and Kamesh Yadram with 15.
Another West Indies U19 selectee, Ashmead Nedd snared 5-14 for Georgetown who cruised to 124 for 2 in just 31.3 thanks to 57 from all-rounder Christopher Barnwell and 37 from skipper Leon Johnson.
