Lusignan Prison escapee gets 18-month sentence

Days after prison escapee Andrew Chung was turned over to Police by his relatives, he was charged for escaping from lawful custody.

Chung, who had escaped from the Lusignan Prison, located on the East Coast of Demerara, was placed before the courts on Tuesday.
The escapee was charged with the offence of Escape from Lawful Custody Contrary to Section 339 (b) of the Criminal Law Offences Act, chapter 8:01.
He appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, and pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him. As such, he was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
Chung was one of two prisoners who escaped from the Lusignan Prison on Tuesday last. He was on remand for break and enter and larceny.

Still on the run: Shazam Kalil, also known as “Boi”

The other prisoner – Shazam Kalil, also known as “Boi”, a murder convict who was serving a life sentence, remains at large.
The Joint Services have still not yet revealed how the inmates made their escape, but they did confirm that the men were discovered missing around 07:30h on Tuesday last during a roll call.
