Mahaica residents concerned about poor water quality

Residents of Lancaster, Mahaica, Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), especially in the Riverview and Mosquito Hall areas, are complaining bitterly over being forced to use poor quality water for over a month now.
They are calling on the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) to stage an intervention to rectify the issue. Guyana Times received information stating that the water coming through the taps is discoloured and is not healthy for consumption.
Reports also state that sediments could be seen floating in the water. The water when use for domestic purposes, especially to do laundry, is causing the clothing to be discoloured, one resident stated.
The water is being described as rusted colour with fragments floating in it.
One resident, identified as ‘James’, told this publication “I am fed up of having to use such terrible water and having to pay for it when no one cares for your welfare. The water is hazardous to our health, how long will we have to use it?”
Another resident lamented that she became sick because of having to consume the water. This newspaper also heard that the residents have taken their concerns to the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) but nothing has been done.
The residents have also made numerous reports to GWI but have not received any assistance thus far. This newspaper made contact with the Public Relations Officer (PRO) Timothy Austin who stated that they have not received any such complaints but assured that he will see to it that the matter is looked into immediately.
Residents of other regions of Guyana have also been voicing similar complaints.
In Region Nine (Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo), residents were also being forced to use discoloured water but this was as a result of the drought conditions.
And in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), residents of the East Bank of Essequibo (EBE) have been complaining of having to use contaminated water but this issue was rectified by the water utility.
