Mahaica teen killed by speeding minibus on way home

An early Sunday morning accident along the Mahaica Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), has claimed the life of a teenage cyclist.
Seventeen-year-old Varesh Mangal also known as “Buddo” of Lot 60 Good Hope Mahaica, ECD, was reportedly struck down by a minibus along the Jonestown Public Road, Mahaica, EBD, at about 07:30h.
According to reports, the teen had left his grandmother’s house in Unity and was heading home to prepare for a family wedding which was taking place at Cane Grove, ECD.

Police stated that the now dead cyclist was struck from behind by a minibus, thus causing him to fall onto the roadway where he sustained the fatal wounds. The minibus was reportedly driving at a fast rate.
The driver of the minibus, on the other hand, claimed that the teenager suddenly swerved into the path, thus leading to a collision.
The injured teen was picked up by Police officers who rushed him to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Following the accident, a breathalyser test was administered to the bus driver but at the time, he was not under the influence of alcohol.
An investigation into the accident is currently underway.
