Mahdia crowned 7-a-side 10 overs’ champions in regional tourney
Sporting action in Region 8 concluded on August 1, 2022 with the Mahdia Movements Family, in collaboration with Mahdia PPP/C, storming to a thrilling 7-a-side 10 overs’ title in a match played in Micobie Village.
The Mahdia-based team dominated their opponents, Kato Cricket Team and Micobie Cricket Team, with ease, although each of those teams gave a good account of their skills. And when the proverbial dust had settled, Mahdia’s Suresh Dhanai emerged as the tournament’s leading run-scorer.
In a statement made after the proceedings, owner of the Madhia Movements Family, Rajkumar Singh, said, “First of all, the event was planned in the Madhia PPP/C Group. I am involved with that, and as a businessman for Movements Family, I have donated the $50,000 first prize.
“The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs have always played a major role in…supporting sports at all times. So, while the game was planned under the Mahdia PPP/C Group, Micobie and Kato took part, who are different villages. So, it is basically the Government of Guyana supporting sports throughout the hinterland region.”
In game one, Mahdia opposed Micobie in a thrilling affair in which Mahdia won the toss and batted first. They made 149-5 from 10 overs, as Suresh Dhanai top scored with 40 (4×6 1×4) and Ryan Adams 20 (1×6 1×4). Needing 150 for victory, Micobie made 103, as Suresh Dhanai bagged 2-9 and Leland Cadogan 2–15.
In game two, Mahdia took on Kato Cricket Team. Winning the toss and again batting first, they amassed the highest total in the tournament – 248-2 from 10 overs. Suresh Dhanai was again the leading scorer with 119 not out (16×6 4×4), and Ryan Adams scored 83 not out (13×6 1×4).
In reply, Kato faltered and made 115-5 in their 10 overs. Rajkumar Singh was the pic of the bowlers with 3-15.
Having already booked a spot in the finale, Mahdia awaited the result of the Micobie versus Kato battle. Micobie defeated Kato Cricket Team and advanced to the grand finale, and, yet again, Mahdia won the toss and batted first. They made 144-1 from 10 overs, with Ricardo Adams making 85 not out (10×6 1×4) and Rajkumar Singh making 47 (2×6 6×4), while Suresh Dhanai chipped in with 11 not out (1×6 1×4).
Chasing for a second time, Micobie could only produce 128-3 from their 10 overs, as Rajkumar Singh was superb with the ball, bagging 3–20.
At the end of the tournament, Suresh Dhanai was adjudged maker of the most runs, having scored 170 runs and being dismissed only once. Trophies were sponsored by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, and gear was distributed to the cricket teams by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
