Mahdia man jailed for B&E Chinese store

A 20-year-old man was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment after he admitted to a breaking and entering charge when he appeared on Wednesday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Calvin DeSantos, a miner of Mahdia, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), stood before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and admitted that between August 17 and 18, 2019, at Campbelltown, Mahdia, he broke and entered the shop of Lee Xin Zuang and stole $300,000 and $200,000 worth of Digicel phone cards.
The prosecution’s case contended that on August 17, 2019, at about 19:10h, the Virtual Complaint secured her business place and retired to bed. However, the following day, at about 06:00h, the businesswoman observed that the shop’s door was open and upon inspection, she noticed that the articles mentioned were missing.
The VC then proceeded to review the CCTV footage and noticed DeSantos entering the shop and leaving with the articles.
The matter was then reported to the Mahdia Police Station and DeSantos was subsequently arrested.
The Chief Magistrate, after listening to the facts presented, sentenced DeSantos to two years’ imprisonment.
