Mainstay access road project at final phase

Construction of the $187 million Mainstay access road along the Essequibo Coast in Region Two has entered its final phase, according to the Ministry of Public Works.
The Department of Public Information (DPI) reported that the Ministry said road markings on the upgraded one-kilometre stretch will be completed shortly.
The works include reinforced concrete curbs, an additional 80 metres of pavement, a three-lane entrance, guard rails, improved shoulders and new signage.
When completed, the critical access road is expected to boost tourism, particularly for visitors to the Lake Mainstay Resort. It will improve connectivity for more than 2500 residents from Mainstay/Whyaka, Lima Sands and Tapakuma.
The upgraded roadway will also provide improved access to the Mainstay Airstrip, strengthening emergency response capabilities for these surrounding communities.

Additionally, the government has invested $139 million to transform two main timber bridges leading to Mainstay into concrete structures. Meanwhile, the community of Lima Sands is undergoing similar major road rehabilitation at a cost of $438.7 million.
The project has created meaningful employment for local residents, in line with the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration’s efforts to promote community empowerment. The works are intended to improve transportation infrastructure in rural areas, particularly where residents have long faced difficulties due to severe potholes and deteriorated road conditions.
