The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has managed to contain a fire which erupted at a two-storey house on Sherriff Street, located just before the Rupert Craig Highway, from spiralling out of control, thereby averting a major disaster on Saturday. A section of the property has nevertheless been damaged.
Eyewitnesses told Guyana Times that the fire started just after 12:00h, when thick black smoke was seen emanating from a section of the lower flat of the building. However, swift action from the Fire Service allowed firemen to extinguish the flames.
After the fire had been contained, visible damage was observed on the exterior of the building. The origin and cause of the fire is unknown, as are the losses suffered. (G12)
