Twenty-six-year-old O’Neil Jeffery on Tuesday appeared before Chief Justice Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts charged for the murder of 59-year-old Roland Kanhai.
The now dead man was discovered in an unconscious state along the Mahdia Public Road, Region Eight (Pataro-Siparuni), and later died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
However, on Tuesday, Jeffery was not required to plea to the indictable charge which stated that on February 29, 2020, at 111 Miles, Mahdia, Potaro River, he murdered Kanhai.
It was reported that the now dead man was at a bar in Mahdia imbibing when the accused walked up to him and solicited money.
Kanhai reportedly refused to give the man the money he requested but this angered him. This led to Jeffrey picking up the miner and slamming him into a chair.
After committing the act, Jeffery relieved him of his valuables and fled the scene.
Kanhai was taken to the Mahdia Hospital in an unconscious state and was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he died after suffering a fractured skull.
Jeffery will make his next court appearance on March 23, 2020.
