Man arraigned for murdering vagrant

Remanded: Kareem Stewart

Twenty-seven-year-old Kareem Stewart of Toucan Drive South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was on Monday arraigned for the murder of Mark Benjamin, also known as “Curl up Toe”, a vagrant, which occurred on January 27, 2020, at the Camp Street pavement.
He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was not required to plead to the indictment. He was, however, remanded to prison until February 11, 2021
According to the prosecutor, on the day in question, at about 03:30h, Stewart attacked Benjamin while he was asleep on the pavement at Camp and Robb Streets in the vicinity of Teleperformance.
From CCTV video footage, Stewart was seen pounding away on the victim’s head with a piece of brick. After the attack, Stewart made his escape. The man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
