Man caught while setting fire at GECOM’s ECD office

Ranks of the Guyana Police Force on Saturday took an unidentified male into custody, after he was caught on camera starting a fire within the compound of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) office at Coldigen, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Smoke emanating as the vegetation inside the GECOM compound, ECD, burns

Guyana Times understands that the vegetation within the compound was lit around midday, resulting in it spreading at a rapid rate.
When contacted by this publication, Fire Prevention Officer Andrew Holder explained that firefighters were able to completely extinguish the fire. He noted that only the vegetation in the compound was burnt and that no damage was caused to any building or items in the area.
“As soon as the Fire Service got there, they used a hose wheel from the fire tender and completely extinguished the fire. In this dry weather season, any grass fire has the propensity to spread very quickly and as long as the vegetation is dry it would consume a wide area in a short period of time but luckily for us, they were able to catch it at an early stage,” he said.
Meanwhile, Commander of Region Four Subdivision C (East Coast Demerara), Royston Andries-Junor when contacted said that the individual in custody is a “junkie”.
