Man charged with beating ex-girlfriend with hockey stick

A 29-year-old man was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Thursday for beating his ex-girlfriend with a hockey stick after she refused to have sexual intercourse with him.

Remanded: Fabian Crawford

Fabian Crawford, a labourer of Laing Avenue, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that between February 18 and 19, 2022, at Laing Avenue, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded a woman with intent to maim, disfigure or disable her.
The court heard that due to Crawford’s alleged abusive ways, the woman ended her relationship with him last month. On January 18, he reportedly broke a cell phone he had bought for her.
The woman is alleged to have visited his home on the day in question, and asked him for money to repair her phone.
It was then that he allegedly demanded that she have sex with him in order for him to give her the money. But when the woman refused, he allegedly became angry, armed himself with a hockey stick, and dealt her several lashes to her head and about her body.
The matter was then reported and following a probe, Crawford was arrested and prosecuted. His next court date is March 9. (G1)
