Man convicted for sodomising girl files appeal

Paul Abrams, who was in 2016, found guilty and sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for sodomy and indecent assault perpetrated on a 17-year-old girl, has moved to the Guyana Court of Appeal to challenge the decision of the trial court.
The offences were committed on December 5, 2007, at a location on the East Bank of Demerara.
Following a trial before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow, Abrams was found guilty of the offences by a 12-member jury.
The prosecution’s case was that he lured the young girl into a room and sodomised her. The Trial Judge sentenced Abrams to 25 years in jail on the sodomy charge, and four years for the indecent assault.
The Judge ordered that the sentences be served concurrently. During sentencing, Justice Barlow made it clear that the court needs to send a strong message to society that offences of such nature will not be tolerated.
